Mapping University Mental Health Services: Learning from the Experiences of Queer and Trans Students and Service Providers

Sarah Smith, University of Toronto, sar.smith@utoronto.ca

The RISE Centre for Queer and Trans Health Research is looking for students who identify as Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning or another sexual or gender minority (2SLGBTQ+) to be interviewed for a research project on the subject of 2SLGBTQ+ student mental health at the University of Toronto. This queer- and trans-led research project seeks to fill gaps in data regarding the unique mental health experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ students and to understand how intersecting aspects of oppression including racism, sexism, classism, and ableism impact 2SLGBTQ+ students’ experiences with both their mental health and university mental health care services. We are currently seeking to engage with two groups of interest in semi-structured, qualitative interviews: 1) 2S/LGBTQ+ students who have used on-campus mental health care services and supports at the University of Toronto, and 2) mental health care providers and university administrators at the University of Toronto who work in the area of student mental health. For student participants, you qualify for this student if you: 1) Identify as Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning or another sexual or gender minority (2S/LGBTQ+) and 2) Have lived experience of mental health challenges (with or without a formal diagnosis) we would love to speak with you! We are looking for students across all campuses and levels of education (undergraduate, master’s, and PhD). We are particularly interested in working with trans students, racialized students, and disabled students. For other participants, you qualify for this study if you: Work in student mental health care in some capacity (e.g., as a counsellor, therapist, social workers, primary physician, psychiatrist, psychologist nurse) at any of the University of Toronto's three campuses. For more information, please contact Dr. Sarah Smith at sar.smith@utoronto.ca This project has been approved by the University of Toronto's Human Research Ethics Board.
